A system boiler heats a stored hot water cylinder rather than heating on demand, which is what lets several taps and showers run at once without the flow collapsing. It is a sealed, pressurised system: the expansion vessel and most of the key components are built into the boiler, so the old cold-water and feed-and-expansion tanks in the loft are removed.
How a system boiler heats your water
The boiler heats water and sends it to a hot water cylinder, where it is stored ready for use. When you turn on a tap, hot water is drawn from the cylinder at mains-fed pressure. Because a full cylinder is waiting, two showers and a kitchen tap can run together far more comfortably than on a combi, until the cylinder needs to reheat.
The same boiler runs your central heating on a sealed circuit, so there are no tanks in the loft to maintain or worry about freezing.
Who a system boiler suits
System boilers come into their own in homes with two or more bathrooms, or busy households where mornings mean overlapping showers. They are also the straightforward choice when a property already has a hot water cylinder, since the existing cylinder can often be retained.
